When we sleep, our bodies will secrete more dead skin, which will stick to the surface of the mattress over time and can cause serious respiratory and dermatological conditions. Cleaning the mattress is essential, and should be done at least every 3 months to prolong the use of the mattress, as well as protect your health from pathogenic bacteria. The following article will show you how to deep clean a mattress at home.

Rubber mattresses, spring mattresses, and cotton mattresses are the three most common types of mattresses. Different types of mattresses will require various cleaning techniques to guarantee that the mattress is cleaned properly and unharmed during the cleaning process.

How to clean a latex mattress

Latex is a material that is very susceptible to environmental influences such as temperature, light and chemicals. As a result, in order to keep the rubber mattress durable, it should be cleaned according to the following principles:

Step 1: Remove the sheets and mattress from the bed

If the mattress has been in use for a long time (more than 6 months) and there is a lot of dirt on the surface. First of all, you must remove all of the upholstery and put it in the washing machine for cleaning. Then, clean the dirt adhering on the mattress with a high-capacity vacuum cleaner.

Step 2: Clean the mattress with natural detergents

In fact, you can still use common detergents to wash the mattress. However, you should only use these substances in a small area with stubborn stains. What needs to be done is to dilute these detergents with water. Use an absorbent towel, squeeze it dry, then wipe it and press it hard until there are no more stains.

In addition, you should not use strong detergents on the entire rubber mattress as it will reduce the durability of the mattress and damage the elastic structure of the rubber. The mattress should be washed using natural detergents such baking soda, alcohol, salt, or chalk. You can dissolve the baking soda with vinegar and warm water, then pour the mixture over the stain on the mattress and wait a few minutes, the stain will disappear. Then use a vacuum to remove the baking soda powder

How to clean a mattress made of cotton

Cotton mattresses cannot be washed with soap in the same way that clothing is washed. Because pressed cotton mattresses are made up of polyester fibers that have been compressed into a block. When the polyester fibers come into touch with water, they lose their capacity to attach, causing the mattress to soften quickly.

Furthermore, if the mattress is not completely hygroscopic, it will easily accumulate water inside, resulting in an unpleasant mold odor. This will cause ideal conditions for parasites and molds to thrive in the mattress, bringing negative health impacts. As a result, in order to make the cotton mattress durable, follow these steps when washing it:

  • Step 1: Remove the mattress cover and clean the inner cushion core with a vacuum cleaner similar to cleaning rubber mattress.  You can place the tiltable mattress using a wet towel on the surface of the mattress and then use a stick or hand to smash the dust out.
  • Step 2: Clean the tough stains with common detergents or hydrogen peroxide first. For Hydrogen Peroxide, just pour the liquid directly onto the dirty mattress area and  rub it vigorously until it is completely clean.
  • Step 3: Dust the entire mattress with baking soda powder. Wait 30 minutes for these ingredients to promote their desiccant and disinfecting properties. Then, clean it again with a towel or a vacuum cleaner.
  • Step 4:  Dry the mattress in a well-ventilated place to ensure the mattress is not moldy. However, it should not be dried directly in the sun because this will impair the service life of the mattress, affecting the elasticity of it.

Difficulties in washing spring mattresses are often caused by heavy sized mattresses. You should avoid exposing the mattress to water as it will cause the spring metal frame of the mattress to quickly deteriorate. So these are the steps to clean spring mattress:

  • Step 1: Remove the mattress cover and deep clean the mattress core with a high-powered vacuum cleaner.
  • Step 2: Clean tough stains with detergents or hydrogen peroxide first.
  • Step 3: Using a special cleaning liquid absorbent towel, drain and wipe off the mattress surface, you can use a brush to gently scrub the mattress surface. Use a vacuum cleaner to clean again. You can repeat these steps 2-3 times until you feel the mattress is clean. Then, dry the mattress in a cool place or use a fan to dry the mattress surface.

The topper is a mattress attachment that is used to spread on top of the mattress. Toppers are normally 3cm thick and have a thin thickness. The topper’s main purpose is to give your mattress greater softness and comfort, resulting in a more comfortable sleep.

The steps to clean the topper mattress are the same as cleaning the cotton mattress. Use a vacuum cleaner, towel, and detergents with baking soda to clean and vacuum the odor, then dry.

During your daily activities, it is common for the mattress to be stuck with blood stains because you have a nosebleed or have periods (with women). Therefore, we will provide you with some tips to remove blood stains on the mattress as quickly as possible!

  1. Use cold water when handling a blood-soaked mattress, you are required to use cold water to clean the mattress. Because hot water will cause stains to penetrate deeper into the mattress surface and it is difficult to clean.

As soon as the bloodstains are found, immediately remove the sheets and swing over and soak in cold water. With the use of cold water, excess blood will be rejected from the fabric strands easily.

  1. One of the substances that efficiently eliminates bloodstains is hydrogen peroxide. When combined with water, this solution aids in the total removal of bloodstains from the surface of the mattress as well as the bed sheet.
  2. The baking soda powder is a multi-purpose detergent. To clean a mattress blood stain, use baking Soda.Simply combine it with cold water or lemon juice and apply it to the stains, then wait for 15 minutes for the mattress to be spotless again.
