A hairbrush is a tool that everyone uses at least once a day to brush their hair. Although it is an essential item, cleaning the hairbrush is less of a concern and priority. You may not realise it, but if you continue to use unclean hairbrushes, your hair may suffer from scalp fungus, dandruff, hair loss, and other issues. So, how do you clean your hairbrush properly? What is the best way to clean your hair brushes ? Stay calm and let’s Sparkling and Beyond show you

Why do I get dust in my hairbrush?

Did you know that your hairbrushes have to deal with all the debris, oil, dead skin, hair loss, etc. on your head every day? These dirt will grow and proliferate over time, eventually becoming the habitat of numerous bacteria. If you keep using the filthy hairbrushes, your hair will develop issues like dandruff, scalp fungus, and so on. Also, your hair will become oily faster after using them.

A dirty hairbrush not only causes hair problems, but it also offers ideal conditions for germs and mold to thrive. When used on a frequent basis, it can cause redness, irritation, and even hair loss, as well as an unpleasant odor.

How to get dust out of a hairbrush?

For ordinary hairbrushes

This comb is simple and quick to clean. To begin, combine the detergent with warm water and soak the hairbrush for 5-10 minutes. Instead of washing powder, soak your hairbrush with lemon or vinegar. After that, brush each tooth of the comb with a toothbrush to ensure that all dirt is eliminated. Your comb will be as clean and glossy as new in only a few minutes.

For paddle hair brushes, round hair brushes

Cleaning this type of comb takes a bit longer. It is vital to remove all loose hair from the hairbrush before cleaning. To remove the hair trapped in the comb, use toothpicks, pen nibs, nails, etc. If there is a lot of hair, you can cut it with scissors along the comb groove to get it out faster. Then, soak the comb in warm water mixed with a few drops of shampoo for about 3-5 minutes. This mixture will help remove dirt for a cleaner hairbrush.

The next step, you use a toothbrush to clean the grooves inside. Scrub the comb carefully or it will be damaged very quickly. Next, use the faucet to rinse the comb again. Finally, you dry the comb with a dry towel or a hair dryer. For this type of hairbrush, if you find that it is broken when combing a lot of hair, you should replace them immediately (at least a year before you start brushing).

4 easy steps to clean dirt and hair on the hairbrushes

Step 1: Remove as much of the old hair stuck in the comb as possible with a brush, finger, or toothpick. If your comb has accumulated a substantial amount of hair, cut it along the comb using a pair of scissors. Just make sure you don’t cut the comb’s bristles! Tangled hair may be easily removed using this procedure.

Step 2: Pour a little warm water and a few drops of shampoo into your sink. If your comb is made of plastic, soak it for 3 minutes. If your comb has a cushioned fabric tip, instead of soaking it in water, dip it a few times.

Step 3: The remaining hair in the comb will soften after soaking, so try cleaning it with the brush again. Then, use warm water to rinse the comb.

Step 4: Leave the comb to dry completely before wiping it with a soft cloth and placing it in the sink or on a clean towel to dry. The surplus water in the comb will be able to drop out instead of collecting in the comb. The next morning, your comb will be as good as new! If you can’t wait until the morning, a hair dryer will speed up the drying process.

  • Soak the comb in the mixture for 15 to 30 minutes.
  • Then, take the comb out of the liquid and carefully rub the comb teeth with your toothbrush to remove unwanted stains. With a clean paper towel, wipe away debris from the brush’s sides — and between the brush heads.
  • Finally, put them in a new pot of warm water, soak them for 5 minutes and then rinse them with water. Let the brush air dry before wiping it off with a soft cloth and drying it on the sink or a clean towel. If you can’t wait until early morning, a hair dryer will help make your hairbrush dry faster.

How to clean your hairbrush with vinegar?

Vinegar has natural disinfecting properties, making it an excellent cleanser for household items such as hairbrushes. Vinegar kills microorganisms and loosens hairspray and other styling products’ sticky residue.

Step 1: In a mixing bowl, small bucket, or saucepan, combine 2 cups boiling water and 2 cups white vinegar. This mixture is used to destroy hazardous bacteria, lice, and germs, the water should be at least 54 degrees Celsius. If your water is below 54 degrees Celsius, you may need to bring the solution to a boil.

Step 2: If the vinegar solution is hot, hold the handle of the comb and swiftly dip the bristles into it.

Dip just long enough to wash away stray hairs, dirt and grime from your hair, but not too long or your comb will melt. If you use water from a hot tap, you can safely submerge your brush for a few minutes.

Step 3: Remove your hairbrush from the vinegar solution. Remove hair, lint, and other debris with your fingers

Step 4: Rinse your brush in water to get rid of the vinegar smell.

Step 5: Place your brush on a towel and let it dry.

Safety tips: When cleaning metal combs and brushes in vinegar, wear oven gloves to avoid getting burned.

What should I use to clean my hairbrush?

1. To begin, stretch a dry, rough dryer sheet and lay it on top of the hairbrush, enabling the brush’s bristles to penetrate the tissue. If you use a new tissue each time, it will be the most effective.

2. Comb your hair as usual after that.

3. When you’re through brushing, just remove the tissue and throw it away

Another odd but effective way of cleaning brushes: Put two sheets in a bowl of warm water and leave brushes to soak for a few hours. Swish them around in the water to get rid of dirt then rinse with fresh water before leaving to dry.

The benefits of cleaning your hairbrush with a dryer sheets

1. Dryer sheets can easily clean the hairbrush. This sheet of paper can quickly remove the hair and grime that has gathered on the hairbrush, leaving you with a clean brush that looks brand new.

2. Even if you haven’t washed your hairbrush yet, your hair will smell amazing if you use a scented tissue.

3. Because dry paper towels effectively remove static electricity while washing clothing, you can use them on your hair to make it smoother and easier to manage.

How often should you clean your hairbrush and when should you replace them?

“If there’s a build-up of product on the brush then it can restrict its effectiveness,” explains Michael. “Give it a wash about every 2 weeks and use a comb or brush to get rid of the dead hair that’s wrapped around it.” You should replace your hairbrush when you start to see significant wear and tear.

“Once the bristles have started to melt and over 50 per cent of them are misshapen” is when you’re due a new rush, according to Michael. Obviously, the length of time this takes depends on the quality of the brush, whether you’re taking care of it and how often you’re using it. Combs generally only need to be replaced when they’re broken to avoid scratching your scalp.
